Mask or Menace: Application
〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Taako
CHARACTER AGE: The elf equivalent of his 20s or 30s, which is probably roughly 70-something?
SERIES: The Adventure Zone
CHRONOLOGY: From the end of Ep. 50: Lunar Interlude IV - The Calm Before The Storm, before Tres Horny Boys get their mission for The Suffering Game, but after they level up. (and, as such, this app will contain spoilers up until that point.)
CLASS: Hero, baby.
HOUSING: WHEREVER!
BACKGROUND: The Adventure Zone Wiki has a pretty good writeup of his background and the story so far, as well as mechanical elements of his character that I'll refer to in his powers, such as his available spells and items.
PERSONALITY: Taako is a very simple boy. He's kind of an idiot, but it's anyone's guess as to whether he's deliberately acting or just genuinely being stupid at any given moment. He plays dumb for laughs a lot, because one of his greatest pleasures in life is messing with people. One of his favorite targets, Leon the Artificer, has had a nearly complete breakdown over Taako's fake inability to insert a coin into a slot. It's the little things that make him happy, really.
He is overall friendly, though, and approaches people with the social readiness of any RPG character who needs to advance his storyline… which is to say, he might get bored halfway through a conversation and start cracking jokes at the other person's expense. He does lean towards pretending he's above caring about the feelings of those around him, even referring to his closest friends as "fucking clowns that have fixed onto him barnacle-like". But despite his words, Taako sometimes will go out of his way to try to help people, and people he interacts with frequently enough tend to grow on him, whether he likes it or not. Even with people he started off lowkey bullying, like boy detective Angus McDonald, he eventually comes around to considering them fondly if forced into spending enough time with them.
Despite his typical friendly demeanour, though, Taako does tend to be fairly reluctant to give up a lot of information about himself. Part of this comes from not wanting to dwell on the tragic events of his past, such as accidentally poisoning the town of Glamorsprings, but also because he thinks some things are just private. In particular, he's close-mouthed about his personal life, not divulging his date with Kravitz to Merle and Magnus not because he's ashamed of or embarrassed by his sexuality, but rather because he thinks it's none of their goddamn business.
Also, he's got a bit of a problem with sticky fingers, prone to looting anything that's not nailed down, including the bodies of former allies. For example, upon meeting and befriending boy detective Angus McDonald, Taako promptly stole all of his dying grandfather's antique silverware and lied to him about it being destroyed in a trainwreck so he could sell it for profit. Strangely, though, he wouldn't steal from an FDIC-protected bank in the rich city of Goldcliff, even when he knew he could get away with it.
While he's definitely a powerful member of the team, Taako's not exactly renowned for seeking trouble on his own. While Magnus' catchphrase and first instinct is rushing in, Taako tends to follow that sentiment with "Taako's good out here"--in an ideal world, he'd just like to kick back and spend a day at the spa, far away from all danger entirely. It doesn't take much to actually drag him into the action, though, and usually once he's in it, he's in it to see it through. While he may occasionally disappear into an alternate plane to avoid taking the heavy hits, he's always there with back up and a badass spell.
Overall, Taako's personality is that of someone who has Seen Some Shit and kept a good sense of humor about it. While he's frequently self-centered, vain, and blase about doing what's best for Taako first, he's proven himself time and time again to be a true hero and a good friend.
